It’s been a very long time since a movie about soccer raised our eyebrows. Sure, there have been some decent ones such as The Damned United and Rockmount, but they have been too few and far between.

So it’s encouraging that the trailer for the new film ‘Pele: Birth of a Legend’ shows a lot of promise as a movie that could entertain and inspire viewers.

Instead of trying to cram in his whole life story into 90 minutes of film, the director has chosen instead of focus on Pele as a youngster and how he overcame adversity to become a professional footballer for Santos and Brazil.

Starring Kevin de Paula, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rodrigo Santoro, Diego Boneta and Colm Meaney, PELÉ tells the miraculous story of the legendary soccer player’s rise to glory from a young boy, to the 17 year old who scored the winning goal in Brazil’s first ever World Cup victory in 1958. From a life full of disadvantages and an impoverished youth in Brazil, Pelé used his unorthodox yet authentic style of play and his unbeatable spirit to overcome all odds, find greatness and inspire a country that he changed forever.

The film opens in theaters on May 6 and on video-on-demand on May 13.
