Sporting KC’s 1-0 win over Toronto FC on Sunday leaves the Midwest outfit as the only Major League Soccer team to have a 100% win record. Brad Davis’ 70th minute goal kept Sporting perfect as the team continue a strong start to 2016.

While the club were limited in turnover during the offseason, few would have expected the team to come together so quickly.

“We have only played three games so far and one thing we are, is well organized,” manager Peter Vermes stated following the match.

“I think the team is disciplined.  I think we have been taking our chances pretty well.

“Everyone is stepping up from different places.  I think that is the reason why we are getting results.  But it is so early in the season, I can only imagine what is going to come.”

One of Sporting’s biggest surprises has been the solidity of the defense. The backline of Chance Myers, Matt Besler, Nuno Coelho and Amadou Dia have been compact and difficult to breakdown. Along with Tim Melia, Sporting have kept two clean sheets in their first three matches.

“I think our organization defensively has been excellent,” Besler said Sunday.

“We call it active defending when our attacking defenders are going forward with the ball, we are organizing the people in front of us, so when we do lose it, we are able to be in the right spots to cut off plays.”

Compared to this time last season, Sporting had already given up four goals after their opening three games as the club gained just two points from those fixtures. Currently 10th in MLS in saves with nine, Melia has seen fewer shots thanks to the pressure his defenders have put on opposing attackers.

Sporting defense limited last season’s MVP Sebastian Giovinco to a 70% pass success rate, according to WhoScored.com. Giovinco had tallied two goals and two assists in Toronto’s previous two matches. Yet, the attacker failed to create many chances and was limited to a mere two shots on target. In all, Melia was called into action to make four saves against the Reds.

With a week off before welcoming Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake to Kansas City, Vermes will focus on keeping his squad fresh.

“We have a few guys going away on International duty and we are going to give the guys a couple of days off and then we will come back on Wednesday,” Vermes explained.

“We will try to get back into a rhythm. They [Real Salt Lake] have always been a very tough opponent of ours and we know it will be a battle when they come in.”
