Victor Valdes’s unsuccessful time at Manchester United effectively came to an end on Sunday when it was confirmed the goalkeeper was joining Standard Liege on loan.

The 34-year-old will remain with the Belgian club until the end of the season and then become a free agent.

A statement on United’s website said: “Manchester United and Standard Liege have reached agreement for the temporary transfer of goalkeeper Victor Valdes, effective until the end of the current season.”

Valdes, once a mainstay at Barcelona, managed just two appearances since joining United 12 months ago and has reportedly fallen out with Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.

On Thursday, Valdes sent a farewell message to United’s fans, saying: “Thank you all for your support during these months of hard work for me. I will never forget! See you soon!”

Valdes won the Champions League three times with Barcelona and was in the Spain squad that won the World Cup and European Championship.
