Two goals from Daniel Sturridge and a late first-half blast from Alberto Moreno booked Liverpool’s place in a second straight Capital One Cup semifinal, their 3-1 victory over Southampton at St. Mary’s moving them into the competition’s final four for the third time in four years. Jurgen Klopp’s team joins Everton, Manchester City and Stoke City in the tournament’s penultimate round.

The victory came despite Southampton staking an early claim to the semifinal spot, scoring after only 39 seconds. Lax defending on a Ryan Bertrand cross from Saint’s left flank allowed the fullback to pick up Saido Mane at the edge of the six-yard box, with the Senegalese attacker cutting inside fullback Moreno at the far post to convert the game’s first chance.

Near the half-hour mark, Liverpool reversed Southampton’s advantage. In the 25th minute, Sturridge’s sharp-angle shot from the right side of Southampton’s penalty area beat Maarten Stekelenburg to make it 1-1. Four minutes later, after Emre Can’s 25-yard pass with the outside of his boot froze Southampton’s defense, Sturridge one-timed a shot through the keeper’s legs, making it 2-1.

Just before halftime, Moreno quelled the game’s final doubts, blasting a ball cleared from a Liverpool corner past Stekelenburg from 22 yards out, giving Liverpool a 3-1 lead at intermission. Thought he shot appeared to be deflected by Divock Origi just in front of goal, Moreno was credited with the tally.

Sturridge left the game after 60 minutes, replaced in attacking midfield by Jordan Ibe, but it was the man who started in the England international’s typical striker’s role that made the second half’s first news. In the 69th minute, Origi, scoreless in 10 previous appearances with Liverpool and denied a goal before intermission, converted a right-footed shot from 16 yards out, giving Liverpool four goals on their first four shots on target:

Minutes later, Origi doubled his haul, settling a Moreno cross from the byline near the edge of the penalty are before beating Skelenburg from 16 yards. The right-footed blast made it 5-1, capping Liverpool’s most prolific display of the young Jurgen Klopp era, giving the Reds a four-goal lead before Stekelenburg had stopped his first shot:

In the 86th minute, as empty red seats began to appear at a once raucous St. Mary’s, Origi became the first Liverpool player to record a hat trick at Southampton, converting from close range on a ball from the left to make it 6-1:

In the 92nd minute, on Liverpool’s seventh shot of the match, Stekelenburg recorded his first save of the match, palming a 17-yard shot from Can from the right of the area out for a throw-in.

Liverpool now awaits the results of a Wednesday draw that could see them paired with rival Everton in the competition’s two-legged semifinal. Those legs will during the weeks of Jan. 4 and Jan. 26, with this year’s Capital One Cup final to be held at Wembley Stadium on Feb. 28.
