Brilliant, gifted, sharp and talented are all acceptable adjectives to describe Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero. The Argentine has been a smash hit since his arrival to Manchester in the summer of 2011 for a club-record fee of £38 million. While there are plenty of superstars currently plying their trade in the Barclays Premier League, Agüero stands above them all.

It did not take long for the Manchester City striker to make a name for himself in the world’s most popular league. In his freshman campaign at the Etihad, Agüero scored a goal in the 95th minute of the final match of the season, to not only record the victory in the game, but it went on to win the Citizens their first Premier League/First Division title since 1968. If giving Manchester City their first title in 44 years wasn’t enough, Agüero also provided one of the greatest moments in Premier League history with the goal and the victory took the title straight out of the hands of crosstown rivals Manchester United (who wound up finishing as runners-up during the 2011-12 season).

Well aware of the magnitude of the late goal, Agüero later called it the “most important goal” of his career. “You score the goal in the last minute to win the title,” said the striker. “You’re not sure if that’s ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can’t. I thought for all the world that Mario (Balotelli) was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: ‘Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.’ And it went in.”

Not only has the 27-year-old led Manchester City to two Premier League titles (the club won another championship in 2014), and amassed 79 league goals (also adding 31 assists) during his four plus seasons in England, but Agüero is widely respected by both players and fans alike. Other Premier League stars such as Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Wayne Rooney, and formerly Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie have all had issues with their reputation, but not Agüero.

Despite his dominance as one of the best players in the Premier League (a strong argument can be made that he is, in fact, the top), Agüero has surprisingly yet to be named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. His exclusion from last year’s team was particularly staggering. The Argentine led the Premier League in goals (five more than Harry Kane and six more than Diego Costa) and racked up eight assists (tied for the most among strikers) on the season.

Although Agüero is firmly in place as the class of the Premier League, there may be a player that can eventually get to the same level as the Argentine: Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez, a fellow South American, hit the ground running much like Agüero did during his first Premier League campaign. With 16 goals and eight assists in his first season with the Gunners, while working as hard as anyone on the pitch week in, week out and also being a fan favorite, Sanchez has the chance to join Agüero as the two most likable superstars in the Premier League.
