Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is set and join FC Porto this week, according to a report from Spanish state television RTVE.

The report states the transfer could become official in the next few days. The intention is for Real Madrid to conclude the move before the team returns to training on Friday.

While the news is still in its infancy, it can be confirmed that an offer for Casillas has been made by Porto and it is understood the Madrid team captain is open to the idea of joining manager Julen Lopetegui’s side.

In the past, Casillas has stated if he were to leave Real Madrid, he would not join another Spanish club.

Should the report be true, it would appear Casillas has backtracked from previous statements which claimed he was ready to remain at Real Madrid and fight for the number one spot despite the club’s well-publicized interest in signing Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

De Gea’s transfer has not gone as smoothly as many in Spain had thought it would.

United have already rejected one offer from Real Madrid for the goalkeeper and have continually stated that the young Spain international is “not for sale”.

Further speculation is De Gea is reluctant to join the Spanish side as long as Casillas remains at the club.

The veteran player and team captain has huge influence over the dressing room at the Bernabeu and De Gea is hesitant to disrupt that chemistry.

Further speculation is the goalkeeper has been rattled by the events which have transpired in the Spanish capital over the past seven months.

After being crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions, Real Madrid faltered through the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign; concluding the season trophyless.

The team was routinely jeered at home games and some fans even verbally abused the players during the early morning hours following their 2-1 El Clasico defeat to Barcelona in late March.

Iker Casillas, the team’s captain and most long-serving player, was on the end of constant abuse from supporters and manager Carlo Ancelotti was sacked at the conclusion of the season in favor of Napoli coach Rafa Benitez.

The recent news of Sergio Ramos’ fallout with club president Florentino Perez has also caused De Gea to take a step back and rethink whether or not it is in his best interest to join Real Madrid in its current state.

Behind closed doors, it is believed that United officials are willing to sell the 24-year-old shot stopper, but only if their £35 million valuation for the player is met.

Thus far, Madrid have balked at the price tag since De Gea only has one year remaining on his current deal in England.

That said, United are reportedly willing to let De Gea’s deal run down and see the player leave on a free transfer next summer.

There have also been reports claiming that if Real Madrid allow disgruntled defender Sergio Ramos to leave, United would be willing to lower its asking price for De Gea. However, those reports are pure speculation since United have continually stated their negotiations for Ramos are separate from any deal for De Gea.
