English Premier League side Manchester United are considering following in the footsteps of City rivals Manchester City by completing a takeover of Melbourne Victory similar to City’s acquisition of Melbourne City (also know as Melbourne Heart) last year according to Australian site 3AW.

The three-time European Champions view the potential acquisition of the Victory as an opportunity to match City’s success with the purchase of crosstown rivals Heart.

3AW’s Sam McClure said on the website’s show, Sports Today: “Having witnessed the success of Manchester City’s purchase of Melbourne [City], they [United] are seriously considering following in the footsteps of their noisy neighbors, as they’re called, and buying the Victory.

“While the Victory are open to a proposal, there is a view a sale may be more suited to Liverpool given an already existing relationship.

“There are rumblings out of Manchester, over the last couple of days, that they’ve seen what City has done with Melbourne Heart and would like to put their hat in the ring for something similar.

“All I’m saying, is that in five years’ time the Melbourne derby could be City v United.”

A successful takeover from United will certainly cement the A-League Champions’ status as the most powerful club in the country.
