Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is set to miss the remainder of the season after it was learned the center-back played yesterday’s Champions League semi-final return leg with a torn calf muscle.

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Ramos played the entire second half with the soleus muscle in his calf ripped.

While no official statement has been released from the club, the defender will sit out Real Madrid’s remaining league fixtures against Espanyol and Getafe.

Madrid failed in their attempt to become the first team in history to repeat as Champions League winners after they fell to Juventus over two legs in the semi-finals.

Speaking after the match, Ramos did not disclose his injury but did share his thoughts on the disappointment he and his teammates felt after falling short of their goal.

“Juventus deserved [to reach the final],” the vice-captain said. “After the first goal, we thought it was all done. We must congratulate Juventus because they did better than us over both legs.

“The truth is that it’s tough to recover from a Champions League elimination. We’re a team fighting to win trophies and were favorites to defend our [European] title.

“This must be a lesson for us. If you make mistakes in the Champions League, you’re out.

“We failed to score more goals than them at home and weren’t good enough in front of goal.”

Programming note: Espanyol vs. Real Madrid will be shown LIVE on Sunday starting at 12:55pm EST on beIN SPORTS and fuboTV.
