In what appears to be an incredible blunder, Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero has been overlooked this season when it comes to awards.  The leading goalscorer in the Premier League was not shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year (eventually won by Chelsea’s Eden Hazard), nor was he even included in the PFA Team of the Season.

The two forwards included in the team of the year, Diego Costa and Harry Kane, both performed exceptionally well this season; however, not quite as well as Agüero.  The 26-year-old Argentina international has hit the back of the net 25 times during Premier League play this season, that is five more goals than Kane and six more than Costa.  Agüero also has racked up seven league assists this season, as many as Costa and Kane combined.

Most talk of Agüero missing out on Premier League awards appears to be blamed on the striker missing action on the pitch due to a knee ligament injury.  However, the Manchester City forward only lost out on five total league matches because of the injury.  Agüero has featured in 31 total league matches so far, while Costa has only made 24 appearances and Kane did not make his first league start for Tottenham until match day 11 (November 9th).

The announcement of the awards also seems to be in odd timing.  The PFA Team of the Year was declared on April 26th, with four Premier League weeks still left on the schedule.  Since the team of the year was announced, Agüero has done his part to make the voters (fellow players) look foolish, as he has scored four goals and added an assist to his season tally.

Agüero recently addressed the topic of being ignored in awards, saying, “It also happened in the season when I scored 23 goals and we won the Premier League, and I didn’t get the Young Player of the Year award.  My job is just to keep working as hard as I can, and keep scoring goals.  I expect to do the same again next season but what I really want is for City to win titles.”

The Argentine also revealed that he has changed a few things in his life to help keep himself fit and healthy.  The biggest change for Agüero?  His diet.  The 26-year-old proclaimed, “I had to change a lot of things, starting with my food.  I needed a healthier way of life.  I went to a doctor in Italy and he checked everything we did, and I had to change quite a bit – no more pasta, no more sugar and no meat, which I used to eat quite a bit because Argentinian meat is very good.”

“Hopefully, this season has proved that it has worked.  Touch wood, I haven’t had any muscle injuries, only the knee problem.  In training sessions I was struggling a little bit last season.  For example, after every three training sessions I had to stop. I have improved in that and now I hope I can stay like this until the end of my career.”

With the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award set to be announced later in the month, perhaps Agüero will finally receive the recognition he absolutely deserves.
