Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has reached an agreement to renew his contract with the London club for another two years, according to the Spanish publication Marca.

The understanding is Chelsea and the Portuguese manager negotiated the deal four months ago, but didn’t want to make anything official until the end of the season.

Mourinho’s current agreement is set to expire in 2017, but now the manager will remain in charge of the club until 2019.

Despite cries from opposing managers and supporters that his Chelsea side play a “boring” style of soccer, the Blues have just secured their third Premier League title under Mourinho’s leadership.

During his first spell at the club between 2004 and 2007, the Portuguese boss won back-to-back Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

Mourinho resumed control of Chelsea in the summer of 2013 after the Blues finished 14 points behind league winners Manchester United.

In less than two seasons, Mourinho has transformed the London club into runaway Premier League champions, all the while having to abide by Financial Fair Play while other clubs spent lavishly.

Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United captain Gary Neville heaped praise on Mourinho during yesterday’s broadcast of Monday Night Football.

“If we’d have said at the end of the 2012-13 season that [Chelsea] were going to abide by FFP, not spend as much as others, have spent a net of £54 million, have an overhaul of the squad and turn it into today’s squad, you would say that is an unbelievable performance,” Neville said.

“He’s reduced the age, he’s won the league, and it is a far stronger squad.

“I can understand some fans saying ‘boring, boring Chelsea’, but when managers of other clubs comment on the style of Chelsea I find that ridiculous. I can’t understand it. They’ve got no right to.

“We watched all our teams get smashed in Europe this season, Chelsea to be fair got knocked out this season and that was their blip, but they didn’t lose, they actually drew in those games against PSG.

“They are actually one of the best teams at killing games. Atletico Madrid won La Liga last year, but they didn’t win it playing Barcelona football. They won it playing a different style.”

According to Marca, an announcement of Mourinho’s renewal could come down within 24 hours.
