The standard of refereeing in English soccer is getting lower every season and today’s shocking decision to send off West Brom’s Gareth McAuley for a foul committed by Craig Dawson on Wilfried Bony supports that claim.

Referee Neil Swarbrick is the culprit this time around but it’s not the first time we are having this sort of scenario.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Wes Brown was sent off for John O’Shea’s foul in Sunderland’s 2-0 loss away to Manchester United. And before that, Andre Marriner famously dismissed Kieran Gibbs for a handball committed by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain less than a year ago.

It’s unacceptable and calls for the introduction of video replays will certainly dominate the airwaves after today’s refereeing howler.

Technology is needed for moments like this sending off at Man City, game is stopped anyway so 4th official looks at the tv monitor job done.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 21, 2015
