Borussia Dortmund’s early season struggles in the Bundesliga have been well documented.

Despite finishing on top of their Champions League group, Jurgen Klopp side’s continued its nosedive in the German league through the winter break.

On February 4, 10-man Augsburg handed BVB a 1-0 defeat at home which led to Dortmund players taking to the stands to apologize to their disgruntled supporters. The embarrassing loss – their first-ever to Augsburg – left the club, who won the Bundesliga title in 2011 and 2012, rooted to the bottom of the league after 19 matches.

However, since that time, Jurgen Klopp’s side have taken 14 of a possible 18 points and have propelled themselves into tenth place in the Bundesliga.

Many fans and soccer experts questioned whether or not Dortmund should abandon the philosophy which brought them domestic and European success in recent seasons. However, while Jurgen Klopp has admitted questioning himself during his team’s poor stretch, the manager never wavered in his beliefs and it appears the faith he’s had in his system is once again paying off.

“It’s ok to ask questions [of yourself], but not to put our system into question,” Klopp told UEFA.com. “Even in the first part of the season there were a few good games, and we gained some confidence in the Champions League by winning matches. So we are not like a rabbit in the headlights, just standing there, shivering, unable to perform.”

Dortmund enter Wednesday’s crucial Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Juventus trailing the Italian champions, 2-1. They will need to continue their recent form if they are to reverse their home record against the Serie A club.

Despite boasting a fine home record in Europe – having won eleven of their last fourteen Champions League matches – BVB have lost each of their three previous home games against Juventus.

However, Klopp is confident of his side’s chances on Wednesday night at the Westfalenstadion. Especially with Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels back fit in central defense, along with full-backs Marcel Schmelzer and Lukasz Piszczek, Dortmund’s defense has been as solid as it has been all season.

“[Against Cologne] we played another game without letting in a goal and that is something we can build on,” Klopp added. “We want to advance to the quarter-finals and we can do this.”
