English side Tottenham Hotspur are scheduled to travel to Australia to play an exclusive one-off friendly match against Sydney FC at the ANZ Stadium on May 30, just six days after their final Premier League fixture of 2014/15.

Talks have been on-going for a while but the parties involved finally reached an agreement earlier this week with the official announcement aired on Friday.

An expected crowd of around 60,000 people are expected to be at the stadium for the game as Spurs are one of the popular clubs in Australia. However, the NSW government and Destination NSW would only be paying a fraction of the $3million they spent to bring Manchester United to Australia in 2013.

Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow has spoken about his delight at the agreement. He said:

“I am delighted to be able to confirm that Sydney FC will compete against one of English football’s top clubs, Tottenham Hotspur.”

“This will be a fantastic occasion for this city and one for all Sydney FC supporters and Sydneysiders to get excited about.

“Tottenham Hotspur are one of the biggest and most glamorous football clubs and share our philosophy of exciting, attacking football on the pitch and an iconic, premium brand off it.

“This has the potential to be the most-anticipated game of the year and will stand out as a highlight in the 2015 sporting calendar.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino added: “We are looking forward to visiting Sydney and giving our fans in that part of the world an opportunity to see the team up close.

“We all appreciate the fantastic support we receive across the world and the commitment that people in different time zones make to watch games live on TV, so to bring the team to them is a great way to say thank you.

“The trip will also serve to further support our relationship with AIA, who have a huge presence in the Australian market, and we look forward to activating our partnership during our visit.

“Our match against Sydney FC is sure to be hard-fought and entertaining , with the A-League becoming stronger every year and attracting some big name players, so we would like to thank the NSW Government and Destination NSW for the chance to visit your beautiful city.”

The clash kicks off an off-season of tours with fellow top-four chasers Liverpool and title chasing Manchester City also scheduled to play in Australia in July. Real Madrid and AS Roma have been confirmed for July as well.
