During an interview with the Catalan Newspaper Regio 7, Carles Rexach criticized the eating habits of Lionel Messi, the managerial skills of Luis Enrique, passed judgement on current and former Barcelona players while revealing some club secrets.

The interview took place last year, but the quotes have only now surfaced and were published earlier today.

Rexach is the adviser to Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu and a member of the club’s technical committee. The 68-year-old was a player at the club for 22 years before working as a scout, coach and manager at Barcelona for an additional 22 years.

Aside from criticizing Messi and Enrique, Rexach expressed his feelings on club legend Johan Cruyff (an ex-teammate), former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, as well as sharing his thoughts on the reported fallout between former managers Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova; while revealing the two coaches had an offer to work together at Manchester United.

On Messi: “I think last season he at more pizzas than he should have done or was necessary.”

On Luis Enrique: “He has started with too many rules. Whoever doesn’t train doesn’t play. Let’s see what happens when Messi doesn’t train and you need him.”

On Johan Cruyff: “The problem with Johan starts with himself.”

On the reported fractured relationship between Guardiola and Vilanova: “At first it seemed that Pep had accepted [Vilanova’s decision to coach Barcelona], but people started filling his head with things.”

“On top of that, they also had an offer to coach together in Manchester after the sabbatical.”

On former goalkeeper Victor Valdes’ departure from the club: “He left Barca without things all being in order, like with Guardiola in 2001.”

The Barcelona official also criticized current players Gerard Deulofeu (on-loan at Sevilla) and Sergi Roberto.

On Deulofeu: “[He] is good, but maybe he believes it a little too much.”

On Roberto: “He plays, but you don’t notice him. It’s like he doesn’t want to get stuck in. And now the same has started to happen with Rakitic.”

It is not understood whether Rexach’s comments to Regio 7 were made “off the record” or why the Catalan newspaper chose to keep them secret for so long, only to reveal them now.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, Rexach – a member of the Barcelona hierarchy – shouldn’t be commenting publicly about inside information or sharing his thoughts on personnel.

Regardless, there will likely be some fallout from the veteran official’s remarks. It will be interesting to see if Rexach is issued a warning from the La Liga side, or if the long-time Barcelona servant is thrown out of the Catalan club.
