Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League Round of 32 encounter with Zenit St Petersburg, PSV Eindhoven manager Phillip Cocu has admitted that winger Memphis Depay will leave the club this summer.

Depay has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United reportedly being tipped to sign the talented 21-year-old Holland international.

The winger was a member of Louis van Gaal’s Dutch squad that reached the semi-final of last summer’s World Cup in Brazil. He has continued his rapid development with PSV and appears to be readying himself for a move abroad.

According to numerous reports, the winger – who has been dubbed “the Dutch Ronaldo” – has attracted interest from Real Madrid and Tottenham since his World Cup performances last summer. But Louis van Gaal has maintained a steady interest in Depay and has followed the winger’s development every week. During his pre-match press conferences with United, the former Ajax and AZ Alkmaar boss openly admits that he continues to follow the Eredivisie.

“That’s unfortunate, but on the other hand, we must as a club be proud because we have trained him,” Cocu said when the manager was asked about Depay’s suitors.

“At some point, it becomes clear that he is ready for the next step. And yes, I think he’s going to leave PSV after this season.”

When asked if Depay could be as good as a winger as Holland international Arjen Robben, Cocu responded: “Whether he can be as good as Arjen Robben? I think so. They are different players, but they are both fast and have a good shot. And both always have the urge to learn.”

“But Memphis is only 21-years-old and only a few years can real conclusions be drawn.”
