Harry Redknapp has resigned as manager of Queens Park Rangers.

Second bottom in the Premier League and only two points above Leicester City, Redknapp leaves the club in a position where relegation seems likely unless a proven manager can come in and turn the club around given the players on the squad.

Interestingly, Redknapp’s reason for resigning from his position as manager is because he says he needs knee replacement surgery and that he won’t be able to continue training the team.

Given the circumstances where QPR were unable to sign any players in the January Transfer Window as well as the plight of the club with no away wins in 11 matches, the knee surgery explanation is an easy way out for Redknapp who has constantly been making excuses for the club’s poor form this season.

If Redknapp wanted to resign from the club to give QPR a good opportunity to stay up this season, why not resign before the January Transfer Window so that someone better could have come in to bring in some loan signings.

Harry Redknapp laughs off rumors he’ll be sacked at QPR

Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey have been placed in temporary charge of team affairs.

Redknapp told the club website:

“I have had such a fantastic time at QPR. I would like to thank the Board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support.

“Sadly I need immediate surgery on my knee which is going to stop me from doing my job in the coming weeks. It means I won’t be able to be out on the training pitch every day, and if I can’t give 100 per-cent I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.

“My relationship with Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success. I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board, QPR Chairman Tony Fernandes added: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Harry for everything he has done for QPR during his time in charge.

“We part on good terms and I would personally like to wish him all the best for the future.”

Given Redknapp’s poor form as manager of QPR and his upcoming surgery, it would seem likely that ‘ol Harry will retire from football since the man has seen the game pass him by.

However, in an interview with Jim White of Sky Sports, Harry Redknapp says that he’ll be back in the sport after he recovers from surgery. Redknapp said:

“There is no way I’m giving up football.”

QPR’s next match is this Saturday when they play Southampton.
