Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has blocked a move by Paris Saint-Germain for teenage winger Adnan Januzaj, according to the player’s agent Dirk de Vriese.

The 19-year-old has been the subject of transfer speculation as the Belgian has found it difficult to earn a spot in Van Gaal’s starting eleven. After a breakthrough season under former United boss David Moyes last season, Januzaj has struggled for a place in the Dutchman’s team.

His creativity and adventurousness are no longer on display. Januzaj has looked indecisive and lethargic for long stretches of match. More often than not, the winger is seen standing on his heels and is second-best when it comes to responding to the development of play. He appears to be reacting to the movement of the ball, instead of reading the game and anticipating its flow.

Van Gaal has also required his squad to defend as a unit. This is something Januzaj has also grappled with during his sophomore season with the first-team. He appears physically overwhelmed or just disinterested with defending.

While the United manager has recently selected the winger in his 18-man match day squad, the Belgium international has only made twelve appearances (five starts) in all competitions for the club this season.

Many feel that the talented young player could benefit from a loan move away from Old Trafford, but it appears Van Gaal is keen to oversee the development of the Belgian personally.

“Yes, PSG have shown themselves to be interested this winter,” Januzaj’s agent said. “They directly contacted Manchester United for information.”

“But Louis van Gaal announced that he [Januzaj] cannot leave this winter. Not as a permanent transfer nor as a loan.”

“The coach considered him as an important player for the squad. He is counting on everyone.”

“It seems like a definitive decision. I don’t think that it can change.”

Januzaj started United’s last match against Cambridge in the FA Cup.

While the young Belgian looked more energetic and focused against the League Two side, he has still failed to tally a goal or an assist in twelve appearances for United this season.
