Brazilian striker Brandao has been handed a one-month jail sentence along with a £16,000 fine for headbutting Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta.

The Bastia player had already been given a six-month ban by the Ligue de Football Professionnel for an incident which took place at the Parc des Princes on August 16th.

After his side’s 2-0 loss to PSG, Brandao waited in the dressing room corridor for 20 minutes after being substituted earlier in the match. As the players came off the pitch he walked over to Motta and butted him in the face before running away – Motta’s nose was broken in the process.

Brandao insisted that the Italy international had insulted him during the match.

Motta later told police: “On the pitch Brandao said he’d be waiting for me afterwards, but I never thought he’d actually do it.”

Extended footage shows the PSG midfielder going after the Brazilian striker following the headbutting incident, but teammates and club personnel were able to keep the fight from escalating.

Brandao, 34, is currently hospitalized for surgery on a thigh injury and did not attend the most recent hearing.

The Brazilian’s lawyer, Oliver Marin, told the Associated Press that his client will not be jailed, with his sentence likely to be served through community service. Martin also feels the penalty Brandao has been handed in unjust and will decide whether or not to appeal the sanction.

Prosecutors had called for an eight-month suspended sentence and a £12,000 fine.

PSG president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, had called for Brandao to be banned for life.
