Earlier today, former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker David Villa took part in his first training session with Melbourne City FC.

Spain’s all-time leading scorer had previously been training in New York prior to his arrival in Australia 24 hours ago. The striker will join the A-League side on a 10-game loan spell before returning to his parent club, New York City FC.

The former Spain international addressed the media following his first day at the club: “I feel good. I’m a little bit tired from the long trip, but focused on the game and getting to know my teammates.”

“I have been looking forward to coming to Melbourne and I am glad to finally be here and be playing football. It is only for a short time before the season begins but we are professional footballers and are prepared for this.”

“There is a very strong team here and the atmosphere is very positive. I am proud to be playing football for Melbourne City FC and I hope that the people will come out and support us in the Hyundai A-League this season.”

Villa also tweeted: “First day with @MelbourneCity. Thanks to the club and mates for this welcome. Looking forward to play in the @ALeague.”

Melbourne City FC manager John van’t Schip praised Villa’s arrival and expressed his excitement at having such a high-profile player at the club – even if only for a short time.

“David will be an important player for us this season and our priority was to get him training with the group as quickly as possible.”

“David has been training in New York for some time and we have been in regular contact with the team there so we knew that his fitness would not be an issue. The most important thing now is for David to acclimatize to the conditions and train with the rest of the squad so that we can make the most of his time with us.”

Melbourne City open their A-League campaign against Sydney FC this coming Saturday at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. The club’s first home match comes a week later when Melbourne City host the Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park.
