Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has informed the news outlet Canal Plus that his club will file an appeal against Diego Simeone’s eight-match touchline ban.

This news comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement from the Spanish FA that the Argentine boss was found guilty of four infractions during the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

Simeone received a four-match ban for slapping the back of the fourth official’s neck after already being dismissed by match referee David Fernandez Borbalan. The Argentinian boss was then handed two more matches for protesting his dismissal. He was handed an additional match for (sarcastically) applauding the decision, before being given a further match ban for remaining in the stands and giving his team instructions during the game.

“There is a committee that has issued a verdict and there is not much more to say on the suspension,” Cerezo told Canal Plus. “We will now have to wait and see how the appeal pans out. We will appeal the ban because that’s common sense.”

Since the conclusion of the match, beginning with his post-game press conference, Simeone has remained apologetic for his actions during the Supercopa, while also being respectful of the disciplinary committee’s decision.

“The people who make the decisions will have to see what a fair punishment is. When someone makes a mistake it’s right they pay for it, we are waiting to see what the price is. Germán Burgos has the ability [to stand in] and he has my trust; we see football in the same way,” Simeone said.

Atletico feel that since their manager has steadfastly remained apologetic for his actions, the Spanish FA should look on him favorably and reduce the eight-match suspension by one game.

There is also a belief amongst club officials that if the ban is reduced, it can also be served entirely during the Spanish Super Cup competition; thus allowing Simeone to manage Atletico’s league fixtures from this point on (against Eibar, Real Madrid, Celta and Almeria).

Should the appeal be rejected, speculation is the Spanish club will take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
