The reports circulating around Radamel Falcao proposed move to Real Madrid have died down in recent days. The Spanish press are focusing on the build up towards tomorrow’s UEFA Super Cup encounter in Cardiff between Real Madrid and Sevilla (to be televised on FOX Sports 1 at 2.30pm ET Tuesday).

There is also just under three weeks left before the close of the summer transfer window and lots can happen over that time.

The reason the AS Monaco striker has not been able to move to the Santiago Bernabeu is because his future has been tied with that of Real Madrid winger, Angel Di Maria.

Regardless what most fans think, Los Blancos cannot continue to throw big-money bids at players. At some point the club has to recoup some money by selling players. That is why Madrid need to sell Di Maria to another club.

The Argentina international has been linked with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. But according to widespread reports, the player only wants a move to the Ligue 1 champions and Madrid are willing to appease his request.

It appeared that PSG were closing in on a deal that would see Di Maria join the French side. But just a few days ago, PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi announced to the media that his club had stopped negotiating with Real Madrid. The president simply stated: “He was too expensive. We stopped the discussions.”

The deal that was discussed between the Spanish and French sides proposed that Di Maria would be sent on loan for this season with PSG paying the Spanish giants £8million. After the completion of the 2014-15 season, the Paris-based club would pay Real Madrid an additional £64million for the Argentina international.

PSG needed to conduct the Di Maria transfer this way in order to side-step UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions. The Ligue 1 champions were handed FFP restrictions in May because the club exceeded permissible losses of £37million over the course of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

But speculation is Real Madrid wanted more money up front for the loan or simply asked PSG to buy Di Maria straight up. That was too much for the French champions and they left the negotiating table.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated that he is happy with his squad and does not see the need for another number 9 since he is content with the production of Karim Benzema (who recently extended his contract until June 2019).

But the potential transfer of Falcao to Real Madrid is the brainchild of the Spanish club’s president, Florentino Perez. He has been dealing directly with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, on this deal and Perez will not stop until the deal is done.

Prior to al-Khelaifi’s pronouncement that the negotiations had “stopped”, Perez was pictured having dinner with Real Madrid’s director general Jose Angel Sanchez and Falcao’s agent.

According to Sid Lowe of The Guardian, where Falcao would fit in with the Real Madrid lineup has been widely discussed among the club’s officials. Monaco have also told other clubs not to bother placing bids for the player because his destination is Madrid.

Florentino Perez wants to make one more blockbuster move before the transfer window closes. That is why he will eventually lower his asking price to PSG and agree to sell Angel Di Maria to the French club.

Once that deal is done, then the transfer of Radamel Falcao to Real Madrid will be completed.
