This morning, France International winger Antoine Griezmann passed a medical and signed a six-year contract with Atletico Madrid.
The 23-year-old leaves Real Sociedad after spending the past ten years with the Spanish club. Griezmann arrived at San Sebastian when he was thirteen and spent his first four years playing in its youth academy.
Griezmann dropped by La Real’s training facilities to say goodbye to his teammates, who were preparing for their Europa League encounter with Aberdeen. He then held a brief farewell press conference to say goodbye to the club and its supporters.
“I spent 10 incredible years here. I came as a boy and leave as a man,” he told the gathering. “I started playing at San Sebastian, before going on to win promotion to Spain’s top flight and finally playing the Champions League. I’m leaving pleased and happy with my time at this club.”
Griezmann made 179 appearances in his six seasons with Real Sociedad; scoring 46 goals. He helped the Spanish side qualify for the Champions League in 2013-14 and for the Europa League this season.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone gave his thoughts on the the arrival of the attacking French winger, as well as the status of his squad as Los Colchoneros prepare to face Club America at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico on Thursday.
“He can give us solutions and he has characteristics which, until now, the team didn’t have,” the 44-year-old Argentine boss told reporters.
“A few of our pacier, quick-thinking players like Diego Costa, Adrian and Villa have left and we need to replace them with players in a similar mould.
“The technical department have been working through all of this during the past 40 days.
“Filipe left and Siqueira came in. Courtois has gone while Moya and Oblak are now on board.
“Up front we’ve lost Costa and Mandzukic has arrived. Griezmann will give us the velocity we’ve lacked and needed.
“You don’t confect a team from just 11 players, but 18 or 20.”
It has yet to be confirmed when Griezmann will be presented to Atletico Madrid supporters or what number he will wear for Los Rojiblancos this season.
