AC Milan vs Man City and Liverpool vs Olympiacos, International Champions Cup: Open Thread

Day three of the International Champions Cup kicks off today featuring Premier League champions Manchester City against AC Milan, followed by Liverpool versus Olympiacos.

Today’s matches for Liverpool and Manchester City are their first in the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup. The previous matches by both clubs in the States this summer were during friendlies (against AS Roma and Sporting Kansas City, respectively).

With Olympiacos’ surprise 3-0 victory against AC Milan on Thursday in Toronto, it’ll be interesting to see whether AC Milan manager Filippo Inzaghi can help his side bounce back today after he rested so many starters in Canada.

All times Eastern.

AC Milan vs Manchester City (Heinz Field, Pittsburgh), 4pm, FOX Sports 1 and ESPN Deportes
Liverpool vs Olympiakos (Soldier Field, Chicago), 6pm, FOX Sports 1 and ESPN Deportes

  1. Looks like FOX Sports is grooming Heather Mitts for their Women’s World Cup coverage. She’s a sideline reporter today for Milan-City.

  2. Can we assume every co-commentator/host/presenter has some affiliation with soccer? I’m sick and tired of hearing and seeing captioned resumes every time a person is onscreen.
FOX, ESPN and NBCSN are all guilty of it.

  3. City ought to keep Sinclair on board to help with the homegrown quota. Would give us a more direct option on the left as opposed to Nasri.

Then again hes probably playing to boost his potential selling price.

  4. AC Milan looks really poor defensively — in both the Olympiacos game and even today.

Italian teams used to have some of the best defenses in the world.

  5. Interesting to see Kelechi Iheanacho celebrate his goal, but then Gael Clichy walk over to him, pull down his outstretched arm and tell him to stop celebrating (presumably because it’s a friendly). And Clichy pointed to his head, to tell Iheanacho to use his brain.

  6. This could be a very long season for Inzaghi. Milan look awful in preseason. City’s Iheanacho could get some playing time this season if he stays with the club and doesn’t go out on loan.

  7. From the City forum:

Watching the City vs Milan match with American commentators.

    Most hated phrases thus far:

‘He has plenty of real estate to run into’

‘The outside backs tend to get forward quite often’

      1. They have a serious problem with the commentators and their use of foreign language to soccer. For some it’s the first time they’ve heard American commentators so it’s all new to them.

  8. So refreshing to have Janusz Michallik on-air instead of Warren Barton. Michallik knows his soccer and doesn’t rely on cliches.

  9. Good news from Fox that they will have the beginning of the Liverpool-Olympiakos game on Fox Sports 2 while the City-Milan game is still being played.

    1. Bad news is FOX is using ridiculous whooshing sound effects for every pointless detail they chose to put on the screen.
