One of the more bizarre stories in soccer looks set to return from its origins.

According to the Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Manchester United winger Bebe is on the verge of signing for Benfica.

The player, who was originally purchased by Manchester United from the Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes for £7.4 million, has spent the last three seasons on loan at various clubs: Besiktas, Rio Ave and last season with Pacos de Ferreira.

Bebe has never found a regular spot on Manchester United’s first team and has apparently grown despondent in recent weeks.

The winger was upset that he was not included on the club’s US tour and on Tuesday night, after playing in a reserve squad match against Southport (one which saw him substituted after 45 minutes for “ineffective play”), eyewitnesses told the British media that when Bebe was asked by fans whether he would be staying with United, he clearly stated: “I go, I go.”

He has not started a single Premier League match in his four years at the club and it is apparent that the player isn’t part of Louis Van Gaal’s plans.

The story goes that Bebe played amateur football for years before he was spotted playing with a group of kids from his shelter in the European Street Football Festival in 2009. He scored four goals in six matches and was later considered for selection for the national homeless squad which would compete in the Homeless World Cup, but he did not play in that tournament.

Bebe was signed by Portugese Second Division side Estrela da Amadora in 2009. He eventually signed for Vitoria de Guimaraes, but soon after he was sold to Manchester United.

What made his transfer more interesting was the fact that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson went on the record to admit that he had never seen Bebe play before he agreed to sign him.

Bebe was signed on the recommendation of former United assistant Carlos Queiroz.

Now that his career with the twenty-time champions of England is coming to an end, the Portuguese winger was recently asked how it would feel to return home and play for Benfica, Bebe said: “Benfica are a golden shop window, they have revealed several players, I hope the same happens with me.”

An official announcement could be made within the next 24-48 hours.
