MLS team New York City FC today announced the signing of England veteran midfielder Frank Lampard on a two-year contract.

Lampard, who holds the record as Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer, was unveiled as New York City FC’s newest signing, where he’ll join the club in 2015 alongside David Villa.

Lampard, 36, won 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cup trophies, 2 League Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 Europa League trophy. In 2005, he was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. For the England national team, he earned 106 caps and scored 29 goals, making him England’s highest scoring midfielder in the history of the national team.

Although Lampard hasn’t publicly announced his intentions yet, it’s believed that Lampard will follow Steven Gerrard and will announce his international retirement shortly.

While Lampard will no doubt excel on the pitch at New York City FC, there are still question marks regarding the decision to sign Lampard given his disrespectful behavior in September, 2001. He, along with three Chelsea teammates, were fined two weeks wages by the club for drunken abuse in a hotel near Heathrow Airport in England. He reportedly abused American tourists who were stranded in England after the 9/11 terrorist attack shut down air traffic to the United States. Lampard and his teammates were on a drunken binge.

At the time, a Chelsea spokesperson explained the incident, stating:

“They were categorical that in no way had they intended to insult any individuals and they said that they certainly didn’t abuse anyone.

“They were loud between themselves but they, like everyone at the club, have been as hurt and moved by what has happened in the United States as anyone else.

“Their behavior was totally out of order but there is no way that the players went out to insult or abuse anyone.”

New York City’s debut season begins in the spring of 2015.
