After a dramatic Sunday, where we saw pictures and stories flying around the Internet, Colombian international James Rodríguez has wrapped up a hectic 48 hours and completed a £63 million move to Spanish giants, Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder passed his medical this morning and will be unveiled by the club this afternoon at Santiago Bernabéu.

Rodríguez has reportedly agreed to a six-year deal with the ten-time champions of Europe worth £3.95 million ($6.7 million) per season.

A statement was released on Real Madrid’s official website:

“Real Madrid C. F. have reached an agreement with AS Mónaco FC to buy James Rodríguez, who will join the club for the next six seasons.

“The player will be presented today, Tuesday 22 July, at 20:00 CET, in the Santiago Bernabéu’s presidential box.

“Following that, James Rodríguez will take his first steps on the Santiago Bernabéu’s pitch wearing the Real Madrid jersey and will then answer questions from the media outlets in attendance in the press room.”

Rodríguez will be presented with the number 10 shirt last worn by Mesut Ozil.

The midfielder is leaving AS Monaco after playing only one season. He joined the Ligue 1 side from FC Porto for £35 million ($59.7 million) last summer.

During his only season with Monaco, Rodríguez scored nine goals and tallied 12 assists.

The Colombian midfielder would then go on to be one of the biggest stars at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

He scored six goals for his country, was presented with the Golden Boot award, and just yesterday was awarded the Goal of the Tournament by FIFA for his strike against Uruguay in the Round of 16.

Speculation of a possible move to La Liga had been circulating around the player for weeks with everything culminating this weekend when pictures began showing up online of the player boarding a plane and arriving in Madrid.

It was rumored that Rodríguez had told Monaco officials that he would train with the French side, but he would not partake in any of their pre-season matches because he wished to move to Real Madrid.

It is apparent the player got his wish.

Monaco has released a statement on the club’s official website:

“The club would like to take the opportunity to thank James for the role he played in getting the club back to the Champions League and wishes him the very best for the future.

“The club had no intention to sell the player, however the time came when the solution of a transfer was considered to be the most beneficial solution for all parties.

“Monaco is proud to be a party to one of the most significant transfers in football history.

“Monaco is a club that will continue to grow and remains focused on the future. More than ever it has the ambition to strengthen the team and continue to progress for next season.”
