The Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España) between La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and the Copa del Rey/Champions League winners Real Madrid will be played on Tuesday August 19 and Friday August 22.

The first leg will be played at Santiago Bernabeu, with the second leg kicking off at Vicente Calderon three days later.

This will be the first time that the Madrid clubs have faced each other since the UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon. Real Madrid defeated their cross-city rivals 4-1 in extra time to win its tenth European title.

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in their first league contest last season, 1-0. The later fixture at Vicente Calderon saw both clubs play to a 2-2 draw.

But Los Blancos blitzed Los Colchoneros over two legs of their Copa del Rey semi-final matchup, winning 5-0 on aggregate.

Diego Simeone and Atleti will be looking to exact some revenge for their Champions League loss and those late season defeats in the Copa del Rey.

Carlo Ancelotti and his men will be looking to continue their cup winning ways while hoping to lay down an early season marker as to who will be the team to beat in Spanish soccer this season.

Because of the scheduling of the Super Cup, both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will not play their first league fixture until Monday August 25.

The rest of La Liga will commence with their schedules on the weekend of August 23-24.
