Mexican midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos will finally leave the Camp Nou as the 24 year-old is set to join his brother, Giovani Dos Santos, at Villarreal. The transfer was announced via F.C. Barcelona’s official website on Wednesday. The deal is for an estimated €2million and the right to buy the player back if El Submarino Amarillo ever decide to sell Jonathan Dos Santos.

After arriving in Catalonia with his brother in 2002, Dos Santos spent the next seven years within various youth teams before being promoted to the senior team in 2009. He made his La Liga debut ironically against Villarreal CF in January of 2010 and played as a defensive midfielder during the following season with the senior team under manager, Pep Guardiola.

Jonathan Dos Santos has only made 14 league appearances for Barcelona’s senior team including just three last season, partially due to a serious ligament injury sustained late in 2013. Barcelona’s incredible depth in midfield also impacted Dos Santos ability to break through into the first-team.

Jonathan Dos Santos received his first call to the Mexican National team in 2009 but was left out of the 23-man squad for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup and has only played in a total of six matches for El Tri. In 2010, his brother threatened to walk off the World Cup squad based on his exclusion.  At the time it was viewed as a difficult choice for Mexico because the younger Dos Santos was considered a top prospect for the long-term success of El Tri.

But in the four years since the 2010 World Cup, Dos Santos has not established himself at the club level and has fallen off the Mexican National Team Radar.
