Southampton supporters can rejoice. The club’s famous red and white stripes are making a return after two seasons of rather unfamiliar red shirts.

The Saints have worn red and white stripes for practically every season from 1896 to 2010, so it was a huge disappointment to see the Saints return to the top flight of English football wearing a red Umbro kit and then, the following year, a red kit from adidas.

After two seasons in the abyss, Southampton Football Club will wear the red and white stripes for the 2014/15 season.

In a surprising move, Southampton have designed and manufactured their own shirt for the new season. Other clubs have done this before, including AS Roma. But Southampton’s decision is a smart one given that (1) the design of the shirt is far better than anything that Umbro and adidas has produced recently and (2) they’ll be able to pocket more profits.
