Fresh off scoring a brace for Uruguay to defeat England 2-1 yesterday, transfer rumors are intensifying that Barcelona want to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The 27-year-old received a new deal from Liverpool last season but as we’ve learned from being soccer fans, contracts don’t mean much if enough money is presented. The release clause in Suarez’s deal is rumored to be £68million but the clause will reportedly be lowered by £20 million if the Blaugrana or hated rivals Real Madrid are the clubs seeking the services of the star player.

Before the increase with his contract extension and improved wages at Liverpool, the 2011 Copa America winner’s release clause was rumored to be £40 million. Arsenal famously bid £40,000,001 to trigger the clause but the Reds ignored the offer, which was a breach in FA rules.

“Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League which is arguably the top soccer league in the world. And he had a buy-out clause – I don’t know what degree I should go into this – but he had a buy-out clause of £40 million. So Arsenal, one of our prime rivals this year … they offered £40 million and one pound for him and triggered his buy-out clause. But what we’ve found over the years is that contracts don’t seem to mean a lot in England – actually not in England, in world football. It doesn’t matter how long a player’s contract is, he can decide he’s leaving,” said Liverpool owner John W. Henry at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in March.

Because Suarez didn’t force the issue, he remained with Liverpool, but to have the opportunity to play for Barcelona may be too enticing to ignore. The 2013-14 FWA Footballer of the Year is a proven match-winner and clinical finisher that will vastly improve their attack.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have reported that the 22-time La Liga champions have also been interested in a bevy of world-class attackers including Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Manchester United’s Robin Van Persie but that talks are the most advanced with Liverpool on Suarez. To help lower the price of the deal even more, Liverpool are reportedly asking for winger Alexis Sanchez in return.

Not long ago, Suarez was looked at as a talented troublemaker who got in his own way of unlocking his full potential. Now after having the best year of his career while maintaining a solid behavior, the biggest clubs in the world are battling for him and Barcelona seems adamant on bringing him along to retool the side along with recent signee Ivan Rakitic.
