  2. Matt Jones says:

I’m so excited. Hope everyone enjoys the tournament!

  3. San Fransiscan says:

Disappointed that ESPN didn’t show the opening ceremony.

  4. Abdirahman says:

Here we go the wait is over let’s enjoy

  5. Flyvanescence says:

Dang talksport is blacked out. Guess ill have to use espn radio. :-(

  6. R.O says:

    Here we go :-) !

  7. Efrain says:

Directv has multi-angle on ch. 400. But, its in Spanish??!!! Is that legit or a mistake??

  8. Yepo says:

    AN OWN GOAL?!??!?

  9. goatslookshifty says:

    No annoying ESPN ticker…yes!

  10. UVM Fan says:

The pressure and the heat are on the samba boys. 1 – 1 now. What is the pressure meter reading on Argentina, Spain? zero

  11. A Croatia 2-1 win will surely cause some noise :)

  12. fsquid says:

So nice to have Darke and Mac back in my ears again.

  13. Jake says:

    Croatia robbed in broad daylight.

    • hoosiergunner says:

Couldn’t agree more. I feel bad for them… but then again, they wasted some fantastic opportunities. Unless Brazil tightens up, they won’t last much longer than the group stages.

Still, great to have it all started! I’m loving the next month.

      • John Amooty says:

I’ve never seen such a bad display of football from Brazil. Brazil are a bunch of diving fairys and Croatia should have come away with a draw. The ref was also a wimp and played up to the home crowd. NOT A PENALTY.

  14. R.O says:

Back call by Ref. Not a pk. Wonder if FIFA will send this ref home?

  15. Christopher Harris says:

If Brazil win this one, everyone will forget that Croatia deserved to win it. The ref made the wrong decision to award the penalty to Brazil, and Olic’s jump next to Julio Cesar should not have resulted in a free kick to Brazil (an incident where Croatia scored a few seconds later).

    • Jake says:

Christopher I’m just disgusted by this. I’ll watch 2-3 more games and if it turns out like this I won’t be watching the tournament.Croatia robbed. I’ve run of out of ways to describe Fifa.

      • R.O says:

Then you must have not watched the 2002 world cup.

      • Felix says:

        3. world refereeing has always been a “charm” of the world cup. Not much to say, each nation qualifies with a team, and then also with a ref.

And as such, many a game at the highest level has been reffed by a guy who is used to a somewhat more manageable tempo.

    • R.O says:

I won’t say Croatia deserved to win but get a tie for sure. Croatia GK should have stopped 2 of 3 goals though.

  16. Pete says:

Brazil are a bunch of cheats, Diving all over the place, asking for cards to be shown to opponents, even their manager was at it.

Terrible, if they win this comp it will be a bad day for football

  17. goatslookshifty says:

A half decent goalkeeper and a good ref and Croatia get something out of the game. Que sera sera.

  18. R.O says:

3-1 scored not reflective of game. Croatia will feel cheated but Croatia GK should have stopped 2 of 3 goals.

  19. Brian says:

Brazil were lucky to win this game and the Japanese referee should not be allowed to referee another match ,that’s how bad he was, not just for the penalty.

Croatia’s defense and goalkeeper are the weak link and they have to tighten up there and not be careless if they are to finish in second place in the group.

Brazil did get the points, even if undeserved, and that means they are on course to get out of their group. They are still one of the favourites to get go far in the tournament but this display means they can be beaten.

I’m sure we’ll be talking about controversial decisions all tournament long. It comes with the territory. At least there’s goal-line technology in use so that’s a plus.

    Now on to tomorrow.

  20. UVM Fan says:

That third goal saved Brazil. Not a very good Brazil team. Uruguay Luis Suarez is licking his chops at the moment. Croatia deserved a point from this game. In the world of fair play, you want the game to be decided by the players and coaches. Awful call be the referee, this might spoil my world cup. Not a Croatia fan but a true soccer fan.

    • R.O says:

” this might spoil my world cup.” 1 game in the group stage, on 1st game of WC? There are 30 other teams and many more games, don’t see how that game will spoil the WC.

  21. Guy says:

If Brazil are going to get those kinds of pk calls you can just hand them the cup right now. My Grannie wouldn’t have hit the ground with that contact.

  22. Abdirahman says:

It’s all over 2002 and again. I wonder why fifa choose such unknown ref such a game like this. Fifa yu are joking!

  23. Ivan says:

My dad said: God is going to punish Brazil, they will NOT win the World Cup. He’s pretty good at calling those…

I am surprised the pornography started that early.

May the nation of Brazil cry in the 1/4 or 1/2 finals.

    • Guy says:

I’m with your Dad, Ivan, but God is up against FIFA. No telling who wins that one.

    • Felix says:

Tell your Dad to read the Preachers book again.

      • Felix says:

        For good measurement:

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

  24. UVM Fan says:

I have been spoiled by NBC and their coverage of the EPL. The coverage of the world cup so far by ESPN has been lacking. Could it be that ESPN is out of match coverage fitness? Even the match commentaries were not all that great. Espn has been on the sideline for over a year now. I hope the games, the refs and the coverage get better.

    • Jeff says:

Think ESPN has done a solid job so far seeing the WC just started- their studio shows have been solid & some of the features they’ve been showing about Brazil have been enjoyable. Like all broadcasters, they will improve over the next few days as the tournament begins

  25. john says:

I have so much respect for Brazilians but if you are honestly celebrating their win right now you should be ashamed bc everyone knows that was a complete robbery. Should have been 2-2. ref couldn’t open his damn eyes. its a shame really.

    • Jose says:

I am Brazilian and I agree with you John that game was 2-2 1 less goal for Brazil a goal for Croatia the FIFA world cup look like a circus to leave the people satisfied and the president get reelected. President Dilma which was highly booed and called names.
Another intriguing point was the choice of the world cup in Brazil seems that world’s FIFA diligent received millions to vote in Brazil.
But like all good Brazilians do not believe this is the first time this has happened a long time and world cup in France was also tobbery

  26. KovacsTheHun says:

I am unable to accept that the Japanese ref was that bad. Host country in the opening game, expected to win or do well. Might be unacceptable for them to loose to Croatia. So I must contemplate what options could have influenced the ref to give these marginal calls to the Brazilian team. Are they finished?

  27. Michael Nt says:

I strongly believe this opening game is going to be Brazil’s happiest game for the entire tournament… I feel things are going to turn around as match officials will in reaction to the events of the opening game try not to look ridiculously pro-Brazil. If this natural turn-around is not seen in the coming matches then this world cup has been rigged.
