Numerous reports indicate Rio Ferdinand is considering a reunion with his first professional manager Harry Redknapp. The former West Ham duo could be reunited with Queens Park Rangers whom Redknapp managed to promotion with a 1-0 victory over Derby County at Wembley last month.

Ferdinand played his last match of a twelve season Manchester United career in a 1-1 draw at Southampton last month. The former England Captain has been linked with numerous clubs with Redknapp’s QPR among them.  Today in his Mail on Sunday column, the defender addressed his future directly.

“It is feasible that in the coming weeks, perhaps even while I’m in South America (working for the BBC), I’ll make a decision about the next stage in my career, and when that happens I’ll tell you about it.

“But I have options on the table from several clubs in England and overseas for next season and I’m intending to play on if the right situation arises. There is, in all honesty, nothing settled yet. Whatever I do next has to be right for me and my family and I’m going to take it one season at a time. I’m keeping myself fit and in shape, doing my running and my workouts, so I’ll be ready for whatever new club I join.”

QPR’s central defense this past season in the Championship featured former Manchester City Captain Richard Dunne, as well as Clint Hill and at various times Nedum Onuoha. All three have significant Premier League experience but none quite have Ferdinand’s pedigree. Other English clubs could be suitors for the veteran central defender as many Premier League sides need the type of leadership and experience Ferdinand can provide.

Ferdinand could be in demand abroad if he indicates a desire to leave England. Major League Soccer would likely love to bring a player of his stature and reputation to North America and it is entirely possible some continental European club might take a chance on the 35 year-old as a stopgap solution. It is also possible that if Ferdinand impresses this summer in Brazil on the BBC, a broadcasting career could be in the cards.
