Manchester United are close to securing a deal to sign Atletico Madrid and Brazilian defender Miranda, according to a report in the Spanish press. Manchester United’s defensive overhaul looks set to begin with the signing the centre back. The 29-year old Brazilian was a mainstay at the back for the La Liga champions and European runners-up.

Miranda was not selected for Brazil’s World Cup team, so he will be able to join United on July 1 should he be signed. Miranda was arguably one of the most impactful defenders in La Liga this past season, pairing brilliantly with Diego Godin at the heat of Atleti’s defense. In helping to lead his outfit to the league title, Miranda is credited with strong defensive performances against the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Manchester United in desperate need of central defensive help after the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, signing Miranda for a reported £24million is an outstanding way for Louis Van Gaal to begin his overhaul of the defense and begin putting his stamp on the Red Devils side.

Barcelona was originally interested in signing Miranda, but the Catalan club have turned their attention to signing Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain instead.
