Luis Suarez has told his Liverpool teammates he will be fit to face England in Uruguay’s second group game in this summer’s World Cup against England. Suarez underwent a minor operation last week following a knock he picked up in the Reds final Premier League match of the season against Newcastle on May 11.

Liverpool entered that match hopeful that they could grab the club’s first league title in 24 years but results elsewhere deemed the result irrelevant in the title fight. Suarez then returned home to Uruguay but an MRI confirmed he would need surgery. After leaving the hospital in a wheelchair last Thursday, the fear was that the Uruguayan talisman would be out for the duration of the World Cup.

Now however it appears Suarez is making a swift recovery and will be available to feature in Uruguay’s campaign, though chances of the striker being available for the group opener against Costa Rica remain doubtful.

Suarez’s Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson had this to say about Suarez’s fitness:

“Everybody is obviously disappointed for Luis, people that know him– maybe not us – because he is a big player for Uruguay. I gave him a text to see if he is doing all right and wished him good luck with whatever he has got to have done.

“He is a fighter and come maybe the first or the second game in the World Cup, I am sure he will be ready and raring to go. But it’s not just all about Luis. Obviously he is outstanding but they’ve got other good players and a very good team, so we’ll look at different ways and options of how to deal with that and counteract that. We’ll just focus on what we’ve got to do, but first and foremost is against Italy and that’s all we’ve got to focus on.”

Suarez was named the Premier League Player of the Season and Golden Boot winner for his 31 goal haul this past season with Liverpool.
