The Kop at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium has always been a magical place full of song, passion and intimidation. But it used to be a lot different, as evidenced here in this 1964 short film from BBC’s Panorama show.

Before there were fencing and other “safety” measures instituted at grounds across England, The Kop (and stands like it) contained a swaying mass of English football supporters cheering their local team. Space and privacy didn’t exist. Instead, there were huge throngs of people up close to one another as can be seen in the video below.
