Arsenal’s shock move for Kim Källström, best known for his time at Lyon, raised some eyebrows today. But the veteran midfielder bought from Spartak Moscow certainly has the pedigree and quality to make a positive impact for the Gunners.

The Swede was an integral part of two Ligue Un title winning teams with Lyon as well as a side that reached the knockout stages of the Champions League five times in his six seasons with the club. He also was on two Coupe De France winning sides. If one word describes Källström, it is feisty — something Arsenal need in a side that is inexperienced at locking down titles and winning big matches.

At Lyon, Källström often served as a shield in front of the back four with the ability to go forward and contribute to the attack. A mobile and strong player with a very good passing range, Källström also reads the game very quickly.

During a period when Lyon needed help on the left-side of midfield, Källström was pushed wide by manager Claude Puel and managed to make an impact by pushing inside and serving as a wide area playmaker. His deadly free kicks with his left-foot also became a staple of his game while helping to lead an unprecedented run of success for the Ligue Un giants.

Like many other top Lyon players, Källström attracted interest from other big European clubs. However he stayed with the club for six years before moving to Russia during the summer 2012 transfer window. His move was one of many from the continent’s bigger sides to Russia over a two-year period.

Källström will help ease the loss due to suspension of Mathieu Flamini for four matches and the continued injury concerns of Aaron Ramsey. Similarly styled in his midfield play to Mikel Arteta, the Swedish midfielder offers more tactical options than Arteta because he can be deployed on the left. Additionally, his kick-taking ability is something that will enhance the Arsenal side.

Look for Källström, if he settles, to help make a positive impact for the Gunners as they push forward in the league and FA Cup.
