Police are investigating reports that Everton supporters threw coins at Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in Tuesday night’s Merseyside derby at Anfield.

When Suarez was preparing to take a corner next to the away end at Liverpool’s stadium, TV viewers could see that he was being pelted by coins. The incident happened during the 21st minute of the match between Liverpool and Everton.

The local police department issued a statement in regards to the incident:

“Merseyside Police can confirm it is investigating following reports of some missiles being thrown during the Liverpool vs Everton football match this evening, Tuesday, 28 January.

“The incidents took place during the first half of the game when a number of coins and other small objects are believed to have been thrown from the stands onto the playing area.

“Officers are requesting CCTV from the stadium and will review any footage as part of inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents.”

Suarez scored one of the goal’s for Liverpool in their 4-0 victory against Everton. Meanwhile, Everton could face a fine or warning from The FA for the behavior of its supporters.
