In this week’s Friday Flashback, the 1996 Premier League match between Liverpool and Newcastle United was voted the best match of the first twenty years of the league’s history. Entering the match, the Magpies — managed by former Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan — were still in position to win the club’s first top-flight title since 1927.

The 4-3 Liverpool victory at Anfield effectively ended the 1995-96 title race for the Toon. Manchester United claimed the title after being 12 points behind Newcastle on January 31. The Magpies had a terrible March, having won just once in the previous four matches entering this game, which allowed the Red Devils to pull ahead of Newcastle in the table. Entering the match, Manchester United had a three point lead in the table but the Magpies could pull even with a victory.

This match that took place on April 3, 1996 preceded Kevin Keegan’s televised outburst later in the month after Sir Alex Ferguson’s mind-games took a toll on him.
