Swansea City have confirmed today that Michu will be out of action for six weeks. The Spanish attacking midfielder/striker will undergo surgery to repair an ankle injury that Michu has been suffering with for most of the season.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup shared the news with the media on Tuesday morning. With Michu out of action, Swansea will rely on strikers Wilfried Bony and Alvaro Vazquez to pick up the slack. However, Laudrup will try to pick up another striker in the January transfer window after being convinced by Swansea City Chairman Huw Jenkins that the club needs someone else to give the club a new striking option, as well as insurance in case another player gets injured.

Laudrup said:

“It’s not good news. Unfortunately it has been confirmed that he (Michu) will need an operation. The good news is that it can be done in the next week and he should be back playing in around a month and a half.

“But what has happened in the last couple of weeks has changed things. We will probably do something now (in January) and try to add something that we don’t have in certain positions.

“The numbers are a bit down and that is risky for the last four months of the season. He (Iago Aspas) is an interesting player, but he is at Liverpool. They have injuries as well, so that might not be possible. But we are looking at other options.

“A lot of clubs will do business and everyone needs players in certain positions. We just have to do our best and not talk about names.”

As a Swansea City supporter, there’s no doubt that the Swans will miss Michu in the next six weeks. However, the footballer hasn’t been near his best all season, and Swansea look like a different team going forward without him. While it’s hoped that he’ll be back training as soon as possible, it’s also a golden opportunity for Bony and Vazquez to establish themselves in the squad, something which neither of them have had a chance to do with Michu in the team as well as squad rotation due to Europa League matches.

In other Swansea news, left back Ben Davies has signed a one-year contract extension to keep the Swansea and Wales defender at the club until 2017.
