USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann is traveling to England to see how US striker Jozy Altidore does for Sunderland against Manchester City in Sunday’s game (live on NBCSN at 9am ET for viewers in the United States).

Altidore has failed to score in the Premier League thus far, but the American has one goal to his credit in the Capital One Cup. Plus, he put in a good performance for the Black Cats last night in their 2-1 victory against Southampton.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet praised Altidore’s performance last night:

“Jozy played a big part in the first goal, it was a good strong downward header, he was in the right place. To be honest, I was expecting Jozy to score in there, because it would be great for him to get a goal. But it was a great header and the goalkeeper made a great save, but luckily for us Phil (Bardsley) followed the ball and put it in.

“The second goal, which was key to the game, another striker might have thought about himself and had a shot, but Jozy thought about the team and set up Seb Larsson, so he deserves credit for that. Not many people would do that in the same situation.

“I know plenty – and I have played with plenty – of strikers who, in that situation, would have a shot. They don’t care about anything but themselves. So I am very pleased for him, and we need to be really happy about what he has done for us.

“Overall, the more he contributes and the more we play, the more chances he will get.

“Last night, with the header, was probably the first clear chance he has had since I have been here. He will get goals.”

Altidore will be hoping to impress Klinsmann when he plays on Sunday. Klinsmann is taking the trip as part of a scouting mission ahead of the upcoming USMNT friendlies against Scotland and Austria.
