Adnan Januzaj, take a bow. The 18-year-old Belgium born left winger scored two goals Saturday on his Premier League debut, to rescue Manchester United from an embarrassing defeat at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland. But the big news tonight is that the English FA want Januzaj to play for England, according to David Moyes.
Moyes said:
“I think there is some way in which he could qualify for England. I think it’s something to do with residency. It’s something like that [after living in England for five years].
“I think he has a choice of countries to play for. Obviously he has been called up by Belgium several times and chose not to at the moment. He’s wanted by Albania, Croatia and a few others. He can play for several countries and England as well.”
Januzaj is eligible to play for Albania, Belgium, Kosovo, Turkey or Serbia. However, England is not one of those countries. He could be eligible to play for England in 2018 — after completing five years of residency — but he obviously would be snapped up by a different country well before then given his talents.
Januzaj’s contract expires at Manchester United at the end of the season, so speculation will increase that other clubs will be interested unless United finalize a deal soon.
