Manchester United and Manchester City both suffered embarrassing defeats today in the Premier League when West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa respectively beat the two Manchester clubs. It’s the first time that both Manchester clubs have lost on the same day since September 2008.

Playing at Old Trafford, Manchester United lost 1-2 to West Bromwich Albion. Managed by Steve Clarke, West Brom deserved the win after they did everything right, putting in a hard fought performance where they pressed United, kept possession really well, and were very bright up front when it counted.

The two goals by West Brom, particularly the first by Morgan Amalfitano, were extremely well taken. Wayne Rooney’s free kick wasn’t enough to win the game for the Red Devils. It’s West Brom’s first win at Old Trafford since 1978.

Morgan Amalfitano opened the scoring with this sensational goal:

Wayne Rooney equalized with this free kick:

Here’s West Brom’s winning goal by Saido Berahino:

Over at Villa Park, Aston Villa came back from 1-2 down to win the match 3-2 after a brilliantly taken free kick by XX and a defensive mistake by Manchester City, that let Andreas Weimann in to slot the winning goal past Joe Hart.

Leandro Bacuna scored for Aston Villa from a free kick to make it 2-2:

And Andreas Weimann wins the match with this goal:

Who said the Premier League wasn’t competitive? Congratulations to Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion. Both Manchester clubs now have to prepare for the UEFA Champions League matches mid-week.
