Updated: Arsenal have made a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye, according to the British media today. But Sky Sports News reports that the £10million bid for Cabaye (who is rated as a £15million footballer) has been rejected by Newcastle United.

The 27-year-old midfielder has consistently been one of the bright sparks at St James’ Park after joining the club in 2011 from Lille. Already this summer there have been transfer rumors linking Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, so the fact that another club is interested in the footballer isn’t surprising.

What is surprising however is that Arsenal would try to sign another box-to-box attacking midfielder. The Gunners have more of a need for a defensive, holding midfielder after selling Alex Song to Barcelona last year. Arsenal already have Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Abou Diaby despite the latter being currently out injured.

What’s your opinion about Arsenal’s move for Cabaye? Is there a place for him on the squad, and are Arsenal barking up the wrong tree by trying to sign a footballer where they already have adequate depth? Share your opinion in the comments section below.
