US and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has described Clint Dempsey’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Seattle Sounders as exciting times.

Howard told World Soccer Talk:

“[It’s] exciting times for Seattle and for Clint. I haven’t spoken to him yet.

“It’s exciting for him, and obviously it’s his decision, which is awesome. I’m really excited to see him back in action.”

Howard was speaking after Everton’s match in the International Champions Cup in Miami, where his club side were defeated 1-0 by Valencia.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez decided to give new signing Joel Robles his first start in the International Champions Cup tournament, so Howard was on the bench for the match. Howard was asked whether the more competition for his spot has changed Howard’s position at the club.

“I’ve never felt competition or pressure from another goalkeeper. I’ve felt pressure from my own performances if they’re not up to speed.

“I go out and focus on what I can do. In the last 400-450 games, it’s been good.

“Every team needs quality, and quality in depth. And every team I’ve played on has had that — 2-3 goalkeepers.”

Everton now heads back to England to finalize preparations for the new Premier League season.

In the International Champions Cup, the final two matches will be played tonight featuring AC Milan against LA Galaxy and Real Madrid versus Chelsea.
