Despite reports in the British press this morning (and again, no sources attributed) that Manchester United have opened talks with Everton over the potential signing of midfielder Marouane Fellaini, Everton manager Roberto Martinez was direct when he answered a question about transfer rumors regarding Fellaini and defender Leighton Baines.

Martinez said:

“There are no bids.

“When you read that someone is interested in someone, it doesn’t mean there is a bid on the table.

“Marouane has been working really hard. Leighton Baines has been working really hard for the team and that’s all that matters.

“Headlines in the media happen at this time of the season unfortunately but it won’t distract me from the work we have to do. I’m not bothered at all.

“It is speculation in the media and you’ll never stop that. I’ve said from day one as a manager you only concentrate on working hard. I don’t mind having my players grabbing headlines. That’s a good story because it means they’ve been doing well and performing well.

“I’m only concentrating on having as strong a squad as possible for the start of the season. That’s all my concern is.”

Martinez was speaking in Miami last night after Everton lost 1-0 to Valencia in the International Champions Cup on a humid night.

The Everton manager was also asked about developments regarding Everton’s interest in signing Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld.

“Every week we get linked with a name or two. I take it with a big smile. Agents sometimes want to to link players to the UK and they use Everton. I never speak to a player who’s registered with another club just for the respect, and I expect other clubs to do the same.”
