England manager Roy Hodgson took the high road yesterday after being asked what his opinion was regarding England fans singing abusive songs against Rio Ferdinand during the country’s 8-0 victory against San Marino. Hodgson shrugged off the comments, saying that he heard them but “I’ve absolutely no comment to make on it.”

Ferdinand, meanwhile, took his opportunity as pundit for Al Jazeera to make some recommendations of how to improve the England set-up in order to progress further in future tournaments.

“Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and have a real good look at ourselves right from the bottom all the way to the top in terms of the coaching and the way we’re bringing our players through, how we’re getting ready to play and preparing for tournaments,” said Ferdinand. “Because up to now we’ve not been able to find the right remedy. But hopefully, with this manager we’ve got and the crop of players we’ve got now, we can make the right strides.”
