Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle Face Tricky Ties in Europa League Round of 32: The Daily EPL

The draw for the final round of 32 teams in the 2012-13 Europa League has been made. Tottenham Hotspur has a tricky tie against Lyon. Newcastle United will travel to Eastern Europe to play Metalist, while Chelsea plays Sparta Prague and Liverpool faces Zenit St. Petersburg.

Just as the UEFA Champions League draw earlier in the day wasn’t kind to English teams, today’s Europa League draw has been equally challenging to Premier League teams. If, and it’s a big if, the Premier League teams win their matches in the round of 32, here are the teams that the Premier League sides will face in the round of 16:

Tottenham Hotspur versus the winner of Inter Milan and Cluj,

Liverpool will face the winner of Dnipro and Basel,

Chelsea will face the winner of Ajax and Steaua Bucharest,

Newcastle United will face the winner of Anji and Hannover.

Here are today’s Premier League news headlines:

Before I go, here’s a so-awful-it’s-funny video from Arsenal showing several of their players trying to sing Christmas carols:

  1. I think Chelsea should get by Sparta Prague at a canter and take on probably Ajax. AVB must be havin’ a laff when he says Lyon- Spurs should be considered a Champions League tie. Lyon perhaps has a claim to Champions league stature being in it more than several times than spurs who have been in once.

    1. LOL..Let it go Sacto… let go of the hate, I know regret letting him go… you see Spurs getting better. Who do you think will win a trophy this year? Spurs or CFC?

      1. Lets see since 1991 Spurs have one FA Cup and two League Cups while Chelsea have 6 FA Cups, 3 league Cups, 3 Premier League titles, 1 Cup winners Cup, a super Cup ( 98), a European Cup so hmmm LOL Chelsea will win a cup and Spurs will not.

        1. LOL You only “WON” 95% those after 2003 in fact until you won the league in 2005 you hadn’t won it since 1955 LOL, Looking at the clubs history pre russian spending a billion you were rubbish and bankrupt. if you are going to go back to 91 then lets go all the way back and look at silverware pre russian..

  2. Newcastle have the easiest draw and should advance to the next round and will be favored to beat either Anji or Hanover.

Liverpool have the toughest draw and they will have to battle a very talented Zenit squad and unfortunately a very hostile and racist Zenit crowd. Liverpool’s youngsters like Sterling and Wisdom will be in for a very tough time. Unless Liverpool strenghten in the transfer window they will struggle to beat Zenit.
