Few things would be more satisfying to see in this Euro 2012 tournament than Ireland beating Spain. While the Spaniards are current World Cup and European champions, the Irish fans and players have the belief that they can come up big in this game and do their best to win something. Whether or not they’ll draw or even win the game, we won’t know until later. But this Irish team, and the Irish fans, will not go down easy.

Spain, on the other hand, is still complaining about the quality of the pitch in Gdansk. They have the players to thrash Ireland 6-0 or 7-0. But with a formation that now includes a designated striker (Torres), will they come up the second better team?

Before, during and after today’s game, post your rants, raves, questions and observations in the comments section below.

      1. It’ll either be all that beer they drink while watching them pass or the sheaf exhaustion as they run around fit 80 minutes trying to get the ball. Just brutal. Really well taken goal by Torres tho.

        1. If it means that Torres is on the way to his normal scoring self it will take some effort to stop Spain in this tournament. Lack of clinical finisher is the only (obvious) weakness they have at the moment.

  1. Michael
i sure hope whatever you were drinking before you wrote you article yesterday you have some left over.i don’t think the Irish are making the quarterfinals.i hope you think before you hit the send button on your next article about how Ireland are going to beat Italy not going to happen.

  2. I mean come on….the dude has been the biggest head case of the season, practically no confidence, and you’re gonna pull him when he’s on a hat trick. Nice.

  3. “But this Irish team, and the Irish fans, will not go down easy.” I don’t know about the Irish fans but this Irish team went down remarkably easy. Ten minutes until they are officially out.

  4. Oh, my. Hoped for much better. I’m going to uphold my Irish heritage and go down to the pub for more than one.

  5. Spain and Croatia are in a pole position to qualify from this group. If they draw Italy would need to best Croatia’s 3-1 win over Ireland. Doable but not as easy. Perhaps Ireland can go out of tournament by taking Italy with them. On the other hand if either Spain or Croatia win any victory for Italy will have them qualify.

  6. Watching the replay of the Spain game and thinking: can you imagine how awful would the Premier League be without all the imports? It will be almost as unwatchable as Scotland. Think 20 Stoke Cities playing against each other all the time. Lots of honesty, kicking and running…ughhhhh…the way it was before all the big money came in.

Is the guy who wrote the two articles here about Ireland as the dark horse going to write a third one, saying that a Leprechaun (sp?) will eat all three other teams and the Irish will still finish top of the group?

The Irish do not belong to this tournament (their fans, however, do-respect!!!). The lack of talent is stunning: they really can’t string 2 passes together.

This is the real group of death: 3 of the top 10 teams in the world: Spain, Croatia and Italy. I wonder which one gets dumped. Hope it’s not the Croats, but it will be very tough v. Espana.

For all the kids playing and watching the game: watch Spain (regardless of how they fare this time). Watch Barcelona. Yes, there is a “right” way to play football and this is it.

    1. Yes from now on only the top ranked 16 teams in the world should be allowed to play in the euros and world cup. Like it or not Ireland earned the right to be here just like every other team.

    2. They belong, they went trough the qualification, Spain was just too good, they are the World Champions in case you forgot.

    3. Since when did this Ireland team represent the Premier League? The Republic of Ireland is not part England, they are not even part of the UK, so therefore they are imports, just like Spanish and French players.

    4. Spain’s 4-6-0 formation and zero crosses into the box,

Most teams who play with zero strikers would be hammered for being over defensive and to be honest if you’re playing 6 in midfield you should be able to keep the ball.
Yes it looks nice but it is far from the only way to play the game and can be quite boring to watch when they come up against a good team, a team that is hard to break down

  7. Hey everyone, I’m watching the replay on ESPN3.COM and I noticed around the 40 minute mark(25 minutes or so into the game) the English commentary gets interrupted by Spanish commentary. I’m like WTF! Anyone experience this??

  8. Frightening performance by the Spanish. The Irish have some decent players and must have done something right to get to Euro 2012 but they were totally outclassed. Spain’s style might not be for everybody but for me they are right up there with the Brazilians of the 70’s and 80s. They are so good with the ball but even more amazing when they don’t have it. The work rate and closing down is out of this world. Its like they have 15 players on the pitch when they don’t have the ball. Enjoy it while it lasts as 10-20 years from now we will saying just how tasty this Spanish team was. They will win this thing again. Germany cannot live with them. England will go the same way as Ireland. The only team that may be able to do something is France and thats a long shot.
