England 2012 Squad Announced: Carrick Omitted; Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott Included

england subbuteo England 2012 Squad Announced: Carrick Omitted; Oxlade Chamberlain and Walcott Included

The FA today announced the 23-man England squad for Euro 2012.

The 23-man squad for Poland-Ukraine is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham United), John Ruddy (Norwich)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea)

Midfielders: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ashley Young (Manchester United), James Milner (Manchester City)

Strikers: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool)

Standby list: Jack Butland (Birmingham), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea)

What’s your opinion about Michael Carrick and Peter Crouch being omitted? And what about Roy Hodgson’s decision to include Stewart Downing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott?

Based on the above named squad, Hodgson has made all of the right decisions. It’s a strong England squad and I’m particularly impressed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been included. He’ll certainly be the X Factor for England if he gets a chance to play on the wing. His speed and skill will frustrate opponents.

I’m disappointed that there’s no room for Grant Holt in the squad, but who would you replace him with? Andy Carroll, while not at the top of his form, is a threat in the air for England, so I wouldn’t remove him. And Defoe, Rooney and Welbeck are proven England international players.

Based on the above England squad, who would you pick for the starting line-up against France at Euro 2012? Here’s my selection:

Jones – Cahill – Terry – Cole

Walcott – Parker – Gerrard – Barry – Young

What’s your starting 11?

i believe Sturridge recent performance ruled him out. the big question is in d attack since Rooney will miss a couple of matches in d group stage, who’s a potent striker aside from Andy Carroll? if only England could naturalize some epl players…aguero, van parsie, Drogba would av made d list. I think there is lack of world class quality in England. They are just going to make up d number in d competition. not title contender.#SMH

  2. Andy says:

It might just be me but i see alot of the same mistakes that the previous managers have made already. Gerrard/Lampard, Barry/Parker, Walcott/Downing. It could definitely be me, but these are all like for like. If Hodgson is commited to playing one and only one style and formation with very minimal option for change and adaptation then fine. This is the type of squad you would expect. But it just doesn’t leave much wiggle room. I think Crouch and Carrick should most definitely be on the stand by list instead of Henderson and Sturridge.

    • Lyle says:

It’s more about the future now, so Crouch and Carrick are out.

      • Andy says:

If it’s about the future then how can they have Lampard, Gerrard, Defoe, and Terry?

        • Lyle says:

Cause they’re the best England has and represent the experience in the squad. You want them to take the Olympic team to the Euros?

          • Andy says:

Yes, actually. That would help give the younger generation, “the future” a chance to gain experience. People were writing off England for the Euros as soon as Cappelo left. So why not send the youngsters out there and see what they can do? If people are already expecting England to not get past the group stage, what difference does it make if they people the young guys out there?

  3. Parksie says:

I am very surprised that Kyle Walker did not make the squad. I hope the decision was made based on his broken toe. Shame he had a break out season at right back.

  4. Patrick igwoje says:

Adding chamberlain and walcott is one of the best decision, because these guys have the speed, the strength and the skills to make a team more powerful

  5. Davi says:

I’m not an England fan, but whoever Hodgson picks, if he get’s them to play as a team, there’s enough talent to do pretty well. They need to develop an underdog mentality imo, but I don’t think they’ve ever really mastered that due to big egos etc.
I’ve always like Peter Crouch, and he has a great international record, so it seems mad that he’s not even on the standby list. He always works extremely hard, and has shown he can score against anyone, and why should Carroll get in ahead of him? It also looks bad that Defoe has been picked, as talented as he is, seeing as he’s not really a starter for Spurs. Also, where is Micah Richards? Is he injured or something?
Walcott’s place is understandable – he’s got a good record this season, but I would have preferred it if he’d left Oxlade out (just as an arsenal fan really, I think he can contribute if needed).

  6. Skima says:

My formation will be (if he will go with 4-4-2:

    Jones – Cahill – Terry – Cole

    Walcott – Parker – Gerrard – Barry

    Andy Carroll — Welbeck

  7. Cody says:

I’d rather see Grant Holt in place of Welbeck the first 2 games. Just have more confidence in him putting shots on target.

  8. CTBlues says:

I don’t understand how Chamberlain made the squad. He made a grand total of 16 appearences for Arsenal this year. If anything the kid should be playing for team GB this summer where he would actually play and not ride the pine in the Euros.

  9. evan says:

Downing does NOT belong in the England squad. He’s beyond sh***.

Also, what does Micah Richards have to do to get into the England squad??? Far better player than Johnson.

  10. Jon says:

    Hodgson out!

    (Somebody had to…)

  11. dani says:

the day england can play as a team rather than individuals it be the year 3000..they got the players sure but can not play as a team never have..england keeps saying we got the best league in the world ..maybe but not ranked that good in the world as a football team to play world cup..its the mind england picks a team with stars who got no idea how to play together..they all play for themselves not their country.look at the italian team of 1982 who won the cup ,no real stars in that team not rated even to reach the semi s, but played so fantastic as a team no one could have stopped them not even brasil or argentina or germany who were at there brillant best back then.england should watch what they done to win the world cup..dani

  12. Yespage says:

If FA Cup final Andy Carroll plays instead of typical Andy Carroll, then Hodgson made a good choice. However, if otherwise, I see no reason why Carroll is on the team instead of Crouch. Same design of player, but you know there is going to be better consistency with Crouch.

  13. Alex Wolcott says:

I was really pulling for Grant Holt. The guy was #2 in scoring among English players in the league this year. Would have been nice to see a Norwich player make it, as they put in one of the most impressive post-promotion campaigns I’ve seen in a long while.

Speaking of Norwich, I hope Anthony Pilkington will have a spot on the Irish team. I’d heard they were looking at him but he does not seem to have been called up as yet. They need to, because Pilks will tear you apart!

  14. Dust says:

Theo Walcot! Andy Carroll! John Terry! Downing! OX over Johnson! No Micah Richards! wow what a load of rubbish. You honestly think these are the best English players at these positions? if you do I have a really great car for you, real bargain.

This whole Roy is new and needs our blind support is just wrong. Everyone has such short memories.

Ugghh bring on the summer tours and the transfer market.

  15. Mufc77 says:

Another first round exit on the cards for England which suits me just fine. I’m going with the Dutch to win it after getting out of a tough group.

  16. Matt says:

Pilkington is not in the Irish squad, Trapattoni named his squad about 10 days ago

  17. dust says:

Henderson on standby? seriously, how is he even in the conversation? this squad is just so depressing, then you add Roys “style of play” Uuhh this is so brutal, I can’t believe it.

  18. Fabio says:

Micah Richards in one of the best, if not the best, RB in the league, what does he have to do to get a place?

  19. dust says:

So Hodgson has stated he made the choice for Alex Chamberlain after he watched him play well against Pirlo and Ambrosini v Milan. but Ambrosini didn’t play and Pirlo is at Juventus.

So, he is either lying or doesn’t know what he is talking about.

    What is it Roy?

    Wally with no Brolly.

  20. scrumper says:

So its Downing running around in circles and losing the ball at the corner flag while Andy Carroll watches from the half way line holding his back and complaining to the referee. Seen that scenario somewhere else.

Should’ve picked Joey Barton, at least we could enjoy watching the French run.

  21. Joe956 says:

I’m afraid England has no chance against the others in Euro 2012. Maybe if Mancini was the manager and he could bring in world cup players like he did for his team then maybe they’d have a chance. Unfortunately, the team that wins the Euro has to earn it and not purchase it.

  22. Smokey Bacon says:

Very few surprises from Roy and I think Gaffer is spot on with respect to the starting 11. At least we will be difficult to beat though I do wonder where the goals will come from as I’m not convinced Welbeck can play on his own up front. Either we are going 3 and out like we did in 1988 or we scrape out of the group with two 0-0′s and a last minute winner against Ukraine. Expectations are so low this time that perhaps we will all be surprised. As long as we have some momentum going into the world cup qualifiers – that’s about as much as we can hope for.

  23. Dust says:

Has anyone actually listened to Roy’s press conference and thought about what he said? Checked out what he said. It’s full of contradictions and inaccuracies. I can’t believe it.
