Liverpool vs Chelsea: FA Cup Final the Perfect Tonic to Below-Par League Form

fa cup wembley Liverpool vs Chelsea: FA Cup Final the Perfect Tonic to Below Par League Form

Two teams who have under-performed in the Premier League this season meet in the FA Cup final, as Liverpool and Chelsea will look to salvage their seasons on May 5th at Wembley.

FA Cup final tickets will be snapped up by Liverpool fans, who will travel to Wembley for the third time this season. The Reds have already tasted glory by winning the Carling Cup this term, beating Chelsea along the way to success. Despite progression in the cup competitions, the Merseyside club have been let down by poor league form, and currently sit in a disappointing eighth place in the standings.

The Anfield club have shown that on a one-off basis they can beat anyone in the league, with both Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Chelsea all being beaten at the hands of Kenny Dalglish’s side this term. However, worrying inconsistency against the so-called lesser sides has seen anger on the terraces and the dismissal of director of football Damien Comolli.

King Kenny is coming under increasing pressure from ambitious American owners Fenway Sports Group, and despite the Scot’s heroics on the field for the club, he is not exempt from criticism and possible questions over his position. A win in the final would complete a cup double and salvage Liverpool’s campaign; a defeat and the Kop faithful will not be satisfied with 2011/12.

Chelsea have undergone a major upheaval since the sacking of Andre Villas Boas, and now look like a more dangerous outfit under Roberto Di Matteo. The Blues put London neighbours Tottenham to the sword 5-1 in the semi-final, and with the club currently sitting in sixth in the Premier League, need a cup triumph to take attention away from a substandard league campaign.

The Stamford Bridge club will prioritise their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, but realistically face a challenging task to be crowned European champions. The FA Cup could well be the reason to keep Di Matteo on as the club’s manager on a permanent basis, and could be the last hurrah for some of the club’s older heads such as Didier Drogba.

This should be a close game between two evenly-matched sides, with Chelsea entering the fixture as slight favourites due to their recent upsurge in form under RDM. The game has the ability to salvage some pride for either side, and could well play a major part in deciding the fate of both teams’ managers.

It’s a real shame that the FA have confirmed a 5.15pm kickoff. To make matters worse, there will be 3 trains leaving Liverpool to arrive in London that day due to maintenance works… and they’re all before 8am. Not the most ideal situation but such is life I suppose!

In other news, we’re playing Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 5th and then again at Anfield on 8th May in the league… how will we cope with 3 days in-between? Who will Chelsea blame this time for the lack of an extra days rest seeing as Liverpool are the opposition?! ;)

  2. Frill Artist says:

Hmmm….both very good clubs but not in the best league form. It can go either way but one key thing will be the refereeing decisions. If Chelsea are lucky like they have been against Wigan, Tottenham etc then they will most likely win.

  3. warrenLFC says:

liverpool have got it, no more needs to be said there team is stronger and has more talented players!

  4. eric says:

obvious Dalgish’s boys will hv it.jst like carling.CONGRATULATIONS AHH.

    • Paul says:

Chelsea are currently favourites to win… although it’s extremely tight and the odds will keep changing right up until kick off! Have faith in the red men.

  5. Bachan says:

Surely, Liverpool’s gonna take this FA cup 2012 trophy to Anfield as Liverpool so much talented and confident payers such as _ Reina, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique, Bellamy, Gerrard, Maxi, Downing, Suarez, carroll..
Suarez’s amezing tricks, Carroll’s fearful headder, and Gerrard’s awesome long shots…Woo….Its gonna be liverpool who’ll beat bluesh*ts 3-1….

  6. Paul says:

Liverpool have today received an allocation 25,074 tickets for the FA Cup final. We all know how the FA is a joke in terms of anything but every time they unleash a fresh bit of news on teams like this, it reignites all hatred for them. Chelsea will receive a similar amount meaning that there are around 40,000 tickets going to NON FANS of either team. Disgusting on every possible level. Even all fans who have been to every FA Cup match this season are not guaranteed a ticket for the final with that pathetic allocation.

  7. James says:

Liverpool should be worried going into this match against Chelsea. You were very lucky to win against Cardiff. You were also very lucky to score against Everton, only due to their mess ups with their passing, allowed you to take advantage and score. Expect a tough Chelsea defence:)

    • Paul says:

I think you’ll find that both Liverpool and Everton were very lucky to get one goal each in the semi-final seeing as both of them came from errors from each side. Key thing is that Liverpool got the winner… Everton couldn’t manage that bit.

As for being worried going into the Chelsea final… they’ve never worried us before and they won’t worry us this time. What will be will be.

    • Clampdown says:

They should be worried? Liverpool has beaten Chelsea in both meetings this year, and both at the Bridge. Is Chelsea planning on putting more than one shot on goal? You may win a match here and there that way, but not many.

  8. Dean says:

Honestly. Chelsea will win it they are in top form. We destroyed spurs 5-1 and beat barcelona. liverpool lost to spurs 4-0 at the start of the season. Plus we have much more talented players than Livepool. eg. Juan Mata, Raul Meireles, Ramires.

    • Paul says:

Means nothing to anybody. Premier League football in particular is a funny old thing and nothing is a given… the only time you’ll know what’s going to happen is when that whistle blows at the start of the match. Same goes for the FA Cup.

Beating Spurs isn’t really anything to shout about at the current stage in the season. Since Harry had been rumoured for the England job it seems certain pressures have taken their toll at that club and they can’t maintain any sort of decent form. At the start of the season when they beat Liverpool they looked unstoppable, but at the same time Liverpool were having one of their stupid mysterious ‘who the hell has turned up today because it’s certainly not LFC’ days. Chelsea beat Barcelona 1-0… they’ve still got the small matter of going to Camp Nou to contend with and if you or anybody else thinks that’s going to be a stroll in the park and the Chelsea dream is already in place, you’ve got a harsh reality check awaiting you… I’ve put good money on that!

Liverpool haven’t played the most beautiful football this season but believe me they’ll be going into the FA Cup final with a huge point to prove and you can slate them all you like but ultimately they’ve still won a cup and have the possibility of winning another… will be able to say if Chelsea can make the claim of a cup this season after next week at Barcelona. As for having better players than Liverpool… are you forgetting that Liverpool have beat Chelsea twice so far this season? Both of those were at Stamford Bridge as well. Didn’t see the amazing Juan Mata, Raul Merieles or Ramires standing in their way to give victory to Chelsea on either of those occasions. Like I’ve said – what will be will be and personally I hope Chelsea get everything they deserve – which is nothing!

  9. badman james says:

i think liverpool fc will win because chelsea are crap and we have beaten them in both matchs this season so i think chesea are are going to get poned

  10. chuky says:

U guys re funy & jokers, how can u believe that LFC can win chelsea @ dis present form? Its going to be an interesting game I must confess, but chelsea stil have d upper hand if we must be sincer to ourselves, bcos chelsea manager is not ready to loss any game at worst is draw since he took over as d manader of chelsea, then how can u tel me chelsea wil lost that match? Liverpool should just take d outcome of that match in good fate cos chelsea is so despirate at this point. Almighty chelsea wil smill after the game.

    • Scouser says:

You should play for Chelsea as clearly your IQ is on a par with Terry, Lampard etc. Anything can happen and on their day the Reds are capable of beating anyone.

  11. jordan says:

    liverpool are the best
